HTC acknowledges long-running WiFi security flaw, says it kept it quiet to prevent exploits
As far back as September, security researchers discovered a “critical” bug in many HTC Android handsets that exposed users’ WiFi credentials to any hacker who cared to look. The flaw affected recent devices like the Thunderbolt and EVO 4G all the way back to the Desire HD. The researchers promptly notified HTC, but the manufacturer waited a full five months before acknowledging the flaw publicly a few days ago. Sounds shady, perhaps, but HTC sent us a statement clarifying that this is standard policy to protect customers. It says it waited to develop a fix before it alerted the big bad world to the vulnerability. Most newer devices have already received their fix OTA, but owners of some older phones — we’ll update this post when we know exactly which ones — will need to check the HTC Support site for a manual update next week. Meanwhile, in the manufacturer’s defense, the guys at the Open1X group who discovered the bug say that HTC was “very responsive and good to work with.” Here’s HTC’s statement to us:
“HTC takes customer data security very seriously. If there is a known breach of sensitive customer data, our priority is customer notification along with corrective actions. It is our policy, and industry standard procedure, to protect customers, which sometimes necessitates not increasing data security risks by disclosing minor breach issues where no malicious applications are detected. In those cases, premature disclosure of vulnerabilities could spur creation of malicious apps to take advantage of any vulnerability before it is fixed. For this specific WiFi bug issue, we worked closely with Google and the security researchers from the date of notification and throughout this process to ensure that the majority of affected HTC phones had already received the fix prior to the vulnerability being made public.”
Update: We changed our original headline to make it clearer that HTC deliberately kept quiet to protect its customers. We’re certainly not accusing HTC of any wrong-doing here.

Scammers never miss an opportunity to scam, and while Twitter, forums, and email have long been subject to disgusting “test & keep new iPhone/iPad/whatever” spam, it looks like the iPhone 5 version has taken to SMS. That’s right, not only are they content to waste your time and attention, they’re now also wasting your text message totals.

I was looking at this memory from Crucial.
It says "In order to run at 1.35V, all installed memory modules must be dual-voltage 1.35V/1.5V and the system must support DDR3L (1.35V low voltage) to enable the module to run at 1.35V"
Does anyone know if intel platforms, or this specific laptop (R835-P84) supports DDR3L memory? By ‘support’, I mean does it operate at 1.35V? I know it’s backward compatible at 1.5V.

For months we’ve been waiting on Razer’s Blade notebook, a $2800, 17-inch beast that we weren’t sure whether to laud or mock. It’s just that it’s kind of a strange thing to see making a big debut when people are more cautious than usual with their money, and PC gaming (as ever) is being declared dead. But after our hands-on at CES, we were convinced that it was at the very least impressive and well-built, and apparently enough other people thought so that Razer sold out almost immediately.

Peavey Builds An Auto-Tuning Guitar
Guitar-maker Peavey has teamed up with audio electronics experts Anteres to create an auto-tuning guitar. While these things aren’t new – Gibson has had robotic tuners for a while – this system is unique in that it senses and corrects the pitch of the strings regardless of tuning, which means you can do all sorts of interesting tricks with vibrato even in what would amount to be an untuned guitar.

We don’t expect to see any surprises with the Galaxy Tab, but the Aviator definitely has us curious. At first glance, it appears to be the same design as the Droid Charge, and will offer a 4.3-inch WVGA Super AMOLED Plus display, run on Android 2.3.6 and come with a 8MP rear camera, front-facing cam and HDMI port. We’re hoping to get more specs for your enjoyment, but enjoy the press release in the meantime.

My toshiba satilite c655 keeps starting a system repair after hibernating.
Every time I do a shut down I dont have the problem but for some reason the computer shuts off while hibernating and when I turn it back on it says its looking for a way to fix the problem and it starts a system repair but it wont let me cancel or do anything else.
It says that it should only take several minutes but it goes on for hours until I just hold the power button and shut it off. Then when I restart it goes on fine with no alerts or anything. The problem only occurs when I put it in hibernate. Just wanted to know if anyone knows if its bad for the computer and why it does this? or should I just not hibernate anymore?

IPO filings aren’t just a great way to raise money, they’re also a perfect place for young CEOs and idealistic internet companies to grandstand and proclaim their altruistic motives. Whether or not you buy what they’re shoveling selling is something different. Google had “do no evil,” now Facebook has it’s own mission statement, though, it’s admittedly quite scatter brained. Buried deep in the IPO filing is a letter from Mark Zuckerberg to investors in which he lays out Facebook’s mission and role in improving the world. Zuck doesn’t think his social network is about poking cute girls and tilling virtual fields, he “”hope[s] to change how people relate to their governments and social institutions.” And, lest you think every move is some calculated ploy to free you from the burden of cash or personal information, the billionaire CEO explains, “we don’t build services to make money; we make money to build better services.” For the complete letter head on after the break. Trust us, whether you trust and like Zuckerberg or not, it’s an interesting read.

It appears Disney’s mobile efforts in Japan are going pretty well, and with the help of carrier NTT DoCoMo they’re expanding under the joint “Disney Mobile on DoCoMo” brand name. The partnership is kicking off with two new Android-powered handsets launching over the next couple of months that pack in access to exclusive content from Disney like full-length animations, games, wallpapers and more. First up is the F-08D (left), a “luxury smartphone” that features silhouettes of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, a 4.3-inch HD (720×1280) LCD display, dual cameras and 1.2Ghz dual-core OMAP4430 CPU available in pink or white next month with preorders opening up February 17th. Next up is the P-05D (right), which has a slim 7.8mm thick frame, rear camera and 4.3-inch 540×960 res OLED screen all powered by a dual-core 1Ghz CPU that will launch at some point in March. Check out the press releases after the break for a few more details on each of these Japan-only cellphones, or hit the source link for even more specs — no word yet on pricetags or which version of Android these will end up launching with.
