One of the key areas that your local council has a major role in is education and learning. Several different facilities are provided to help support learning and education, including schools, libraries, and community centres which run courses. As a result of this, there is a fantastic array of different Careers available for individuals who are searching for a New career specifically within a learning environment. Some of the New careers include the more obvious careers like becoming a teacher in a primary school, or secondary school or possibly even a higher education establishment. You may also start up a New career as a librarian – the majority of councils have a number of libraries to maintain and run, and in some of the main cities you can branch into more specialist subjects with experience.

Another more hands on type of career working for the council is a gardener. Council gardeners are essential all year round and undertake a wide variety of jobs for the local council – it’s not just about cutting the grass! As a gardener for the council you will be helping in keeping pathways clean of weeds and overhanging branches from trees and bushes if necessary, but also in the majority of cases they will perform landscaping work for the council, helping to maintain areas and keep them looking good for the local communities. The council will also often run their own nurseries with which they supply flowers to numerous projects throughout the community, and they need to employ skilled people within these nurseries to get the best quality plants possible.

Another area largely maintained by the council are various leisure facilities within a local community. The council will normally be accountable for the everyday running and maintenance of these facilities, which may include things such as a swimming pool, or a children’s play park, or maybe even a skate park for older children. The local council could also oversee the organisation and running of large events, such as a local music festival. These different Careers are all as a rule extremely challenging and demanding, and require people to take on a great deal of responsibilities. However they are also extremely rewarding and can have a large effect on people’s lives.

There are lots more different Careers within the local council – too numerous to list all in one article. You can be guaranteed a wide choice of Careers however, and if you would like a job which plays a more active part in your local community, working for your local council is the right choice.
