Why Some Small Companies are Hesitant of SEO

Many would think that in this credit crunching era of high unemployment, the collapse in sterling, tough funding criteria and increased international competition, UK businesses would seize every opportunity to increase their competitiveness in the international market place. Search engine optimisation is such an opportunity and can noticeably increase a websites Search Engine Placement ranking. So why is it, so many small businesses still exist without an effective Online Marketing programme?

Lack of Budget

Budgetary restraints can be a deciding factor, more so if the business is particularly small and has little in the way of funds put aside for an extensive Online Marketing campaign. In this situation, the size of the SEO, coupled with the type and nature of the business, would determine whether employing the services of a Search Engine Optimization Company would be a viable option or not. It has to be understood that, SEO is particularly cost effective and comparisons with other forms of marketing are very favourable in terms of return on investment.

The Mentality Of Small Business

Fledgling businesses often have little or no experience of Online Marketing, and so can be afraid in committing to a long term SEO agreement. Also, due to their size, people in the upper echelons of small businesses, tend to know and control most aspects of the company and can be quite resolute in the direction they believe the company should take. These are the kind of people that regularly need convincing the most when it comes to using SEO services, as they’re not ones to easily relinquish control of any aspect of their business to unknown outside forces.

Lack of Knowledge

There’s no doubt, many small businesses are sometimes unaware of the benefits search engine optimisation can bring. Explaining that SEO services will help make a website which is favourable to both visitors and search engines alike, regularly receives their attention. Elaborating further on the practicality and effectiveness of SEO, and how it increases Search Engine Placement, thus bringing high quality traffic to a website, is often enough to get small businesses interested in at least looking at the possibilities of an SEO campaign. At the end of the day, high quality traffic equals high conversion rates, a fact that few small businesses can afford to ignore.

Staying within Their Comfort Zone

There are a number of criticisms often levelled at UK businesses. These include having a tendency to sway on the side of caution, being noncommittal to future investment and lacking flexibility when it comes to adapting to new working procedures. Of course a lot of this is nonsense and a throwback to an industrial age, documented my election campaign slogans of “Britain Not’s Working” and TV news headlines of a discontented winter. Though largely based on tired stereotypes, some see the refusal by certain small businesses to adopt new practices such as Online Marketing, as a continuation of that old non enterprising business attitude that some say has plagued the country for way too long..

Regardless how well a company is currently performing, it can always perform better. The reasons for businesses not using the services of a Search Engine Optimization Company are long and varied, much longer then the brief summary above may suggest. However, the consequences for not committing to a sustained Online Marketing programme can be deep and far reaching and negatively impact a business for a long time to come.
