Gladiator Helmet Facts
Gladiators have been made famous by such movies as “Spartacus” and “The Gladiator”. Most people know about the Roman Colosseum and the many battles that were fought there. People have become absolutely intrigued by gladiators and have even started collections based off of that intrigue. I wrote this article to tell you about gladiators, their head gear, and how to become a gladiator helmet collector. I’ll even tell you where to buy and how to display a gladiator helmet.
The “American Gladiators” television show is not a very accurate depiction of the original gladiators. These men were slaves and were forced to fight battles to the death. Sometimes they would battle with each other and sometimes with animals. The gladiators battle gear differed dramatically from the typical soldier’s gear. You will see this difference starting with the gladiator helmet and on down to the gladiators battle armor.
Gladiators were meant to do more than fight to the death, giving way to their unique gear. Ancient gladiators had to put on a show or risk execution from their masters. They needed to be flashy and entertaining in a way that an army does not. This meant that their gear also had to be flashy. The uniqueness of these helmets has made collectors want to display their gladiator helmets prominently.
The conventional Greek and Roman helmet always had a round top. They may or may not have had plumes and face guards. Open faced helmets were always the norm in among the ranks of Roman soldiers. Gladiator helmets had various tops including: round tops, spiked tops, pointed tops, and even horned tops. Each gladiator had an easily recognizable helmet that was unique and interesting to look at. This was great for the spectators because it made cheering for their gladiator much easier.
