Long Distance Relationships

There are many people these days that are involved in long distance relationships, their reasons for doing this differ. With many young people moving away from home to go to college, it is often the case that this age group are the ones in long term relationships.

There are different debates going around as to the effectiveness of long term relationships. My personal opinion is that the vast majority do not work.

To illustrate this point, say there is a boy in his late teens living at home with mum and dad. He moves to college, but before he moved he would spend all of his time with his girlfriend, this is the classic beginning of a long distance relationship. The theory is that he will still see his girlfriend in the holidays and then once his studies are finished the relationship can resume.

Sadly though college provides too much of a temptation for males and they are likely to cheat. It will be very difficult for them to resist temptation what with all the parties and alcohol flowing around.

Being in a long term relationship means that men are more likely to get away with being unfaithful, and the more they think they can get away with it the more likely they are to do it. You will probably never find out if your partner has been unfaithful whilst you are in a long term relationship.

Due to the separation, long term relationships can also result in the two of you growing apart. While someone’s away they can develop new friendship groups and get used to life without their partner.

The only way that I can see a long distance relationship working out is if it is only for a short amount of time. It is most probably not going to work if you are going to be apart for several years.

So if you and your partner have recently split up due to long distance then I would seriously consider everything before giving things another try. Don’t just get back with your ex because you’re scared of moving on because while they’re away you’re practically alone anyway.
